Raise your hand if you have a guilty pleasure food. Don’t kid yourself; everyone’s hand should be up!
In my household, Nutella is a definite pantry staple. We almost always have it on hand. Then, inevitably, the Nutella mysteriously disappears. The main suspect is always my mother, but really any one of us could be guilty of eating all the Nutella- it’s just that good. So in my food blogger career, I knew at some point I would have to recreate the chocolately liquid gold. And so with national chocolate day around the corner, I present…homemade chocolate hazelnut spread.
Before you shy away and scroll to the next recipe, let me tell you that making your own Nutella is. So. Easy! It’s even easier than grabbing your wallet and keys, getting into your car, driving to the store, finding a parking spot, buying the store Nutella, checking out, getting back to your car, etc etc etc. Let’s be honest, going to the store to satisfy a craving is sometimes a long process. Now, satisfying this craving will be a breeze.
All you need is 3 cups hazelnuts, cocoa powder, powdered sugar, oil, and a food processor.
The hardest part of this whole recipe is roasting and removing the shells from the hazelnuts. But trust me, its worth it.
To de-shell the hazelnuts, lay them in a single layer on a baking sheet and bake at 350°F for 5-10 minutes, lightly stirring halfway through. While still hot, transfer the nuts to a clean kitchen towel and gently rub to remove the skins.
Not all the skins will be completely removed, and that’s okay.
After the skins are mostly removed, transfer to the bowl of a food processor. Blend until they form a paste, like so:
At this point, the rest of the ingredients are added, and in just a few short minutes, you’ll have your own homemade Nutella!
Though not a “health” recipe, this hazelnut spread is healthier than what’s sold in stores. There’s no preservatives and you can adjust the amount of sugar to your desire. You can also swap avocado or coconut oil for the vegetable oil.
